Brooks Fiber Properties Inc., acquired by Worldcom was founded in 1993 and rapidly became a leading facilities-based provider of competitive local telecommunications services in selected markets within the United States. Brooks Fiber competed with local exchange carriers by providing high quality, integrated local telecommunications services over fiber optic digital networks to meet the voice, data and video transmission needs of its customers. The company’s customers were principally inter-exchange carriers (IXCs), internet service providers (ISPs), wireless carriers, telecommunications-intensive business, government and institutional end users, and residential customers. Brooks offered these customers technologically advanced local telecommunications services as well as superior customer service, flexible pricing and route diversity.
Brooks Fiber went public in 1996 and its successful organic expansion and acquisition program resulted in the $3 billion acquisition of the company in January of 1998 by WorldCom.
